Emotions (2021)

12"x 12" Charcoal on Bristol Board

Emotions is nine squared-off depictions of the emotions of compassion, fear, and rage.  Entirely non-representative, I was forced to conceptualize what each emotion looked like non-objectively. I considered the process of drawing the emotions should start by trying to feel the emotions. For compassion, I talked to my family and thought of unity. This led me to imagine rays of joy and relationships within our lives that connect us to those positive feelings. For fear, I thought of the future and things that make me anxious and thought of conformity and repetition. For rage, I attacked the paper by ripping it up and harshly rubbing the charcoal into the surface. The thoughts of the compositions were fueled by discomfort and violence.
